Flamingo Lips
29 June to 12 August 2018

In 1947, the French writer and man of culture, André Malraux, published Les Voix du Silence (The Voices of Silence). The edition was revised and expanded in 1963, to include, without any chronological or stylistic order, a set of illustrations of works of art covering an extensive period – ranging from prehistory to the contemporary era.
This book, which subsequently became one of the most illuminating and influential reflections on the role of the museum in redefining the status and interpretation of works of art, following in the wake of Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne, opened up a vast field of combinatorial possibilities, leading to reconsideration – and one might even say disregarding – of the influence of historical time on artistic production.
Flamingo’s Lips is the Imaginary Museum inside the Museum – as if it combined all the works of art from all the world’s museums, that we could ever imagine being seen together. At a time when the migration of images has become so commonplace, we wanted to create an observatory, a place for the imagination, from which we could look at a set of images, most of which are familiar to us, and reconsider them.
For this purpose, we have defined a more or less transversal set of themes, which underpin this collection of images from a wide array of different origins and epochs, that enables us to use our imagination to travel across time and space - as if entering a machine that could cross time at the speed of light.
The lighting is cast by overhead projectors, devices that inevitably make us think about the classrooms of yesteryear, where and when art history classes were a kind of cave, from which magical images emerged – magical, as if we were seeing them for the first time. And we recognised them.
