Yonamine • EU UE / Amnesia & Dyslexia

2022.10.10 Voz Multiplicada EU UE / Amnésia & Dislexia

Curated by Marta Mestre

Afro-pop and ancestral polyphonies that dispel myths of origin and authenticity.

“Ewe” is an Angolan expression, which can mean a call for attention, fear or joy. A conversation often begins with the expression “ewe” to announce an event. Eu is the first person singular in Portuguese, EU is an abbreviation for European Union. EU UE, a palindrome of reflections, repetitions, echoes, layers and overlays. Eu is a body with several cultures, Eu is hybrid, Eu is syncretism, Eu is melanin, Eu is phobia, Eu is plural. By crossing very diverse references, pop and ancestral polyphonies, Yonamime (b. Luanda, 1975) dispels myths of origin and  authenticity and focuses attention on the market of “bleaching skin cream” products.

The exhibition-installation, which occupies the museum’s entire ground floor, is crossed by the sign of desecration, cutting and collage, erasure and deletion. References emerge from this visual dust - such as the goddess Europa, of Greek mythology, the fetishes of Eurocentric beauty, sex and capital, and the CIAJG’s African collection.
