Exhibition cycle Fictionalising the Museum

Image

The CIAJG’s new exhibitions underline the idea of the museum as a machine that generates fictions. Once canonised as a sacred temple, the museum is now seeking to rewrite its grammar, in the struggle to establish a new order of beliefs, knowledge and narratives.

The exhibitions by Priscila Fernandes (Leisure School), Virgínia Mota (Atmospheric Diary), Ana Vaz (Amazing Fantasy) and José de Guimarães (Becoming-Drawing-Object), each, in their own way, shed light on the idea of fiction as a “factory”, an (un)disciplined labour or production of poetry.

We are also continuing the two annual exhibitions “Pasado”, by the Mexican artist, Rodrigo Hernández and Colossus Complex, curated by Ángel Calvo Ulloa. The latter presents new works by artists who expand the archaeological speculations and stories surrounding the sculpture of the “stone man”, located in one of the entry points to Guimarães: Diego Vites, Carme Nogueira, Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum and the collective Pizz Buin.

In the “Masks Room”, African sculptures flank the sculptures by Pedro Henriques, entitled Half-eye, long face. José de Guimarães’ oeuvre is presented as a whole, articulated with the collections of African, pre-Columbian and ancient Chinese art. This reflects the need to adopt a “critical museology” suited to contemporary exhibition requirements. The highlights include the African “maternities” and a room dedicated to the importance of drawing in his work, both located on the first floor of the CIAJG.
