BIG Career Award – Guimarães Illustration Biennial

Cristina Sampaio’s clear line style comes from a long journey, starting with pen drawings in comic strips for labor union newspapers and evolving through about twenty children’s books, transitioning her gouaches into digital illustrations. Today, her work channels sharp political commentary with a digital purity that paradoxically digs deep into the analog and contradictory nature of humanity.
Her drawings are geometric and linear but also absurd, organic, and familiar—inviting readers into a unique, bold territory of visual storytelling.
This exhibition, linked to the BIG Career Award 2025, explores her thematic worlds through patiently built iconographies, animations from Spam Cartoon (a collaboration with talented partners), and a variety of creatures whose perfect linearity masks how badly they govern us.
Cristina’s clear line, forged in the frenzy of paper journalism and digital reactions to world events, stands as a triumphant testament to her astonishing creativity.
