FRIDAY 6 TO SUNDAY MARCH 8

This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender

“This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender” is a project by Ondamarela that seeks to address issues of hatred, prejudice, difference, and freedom through new artistic creations.

The inspiration came from the American singer and activist Pete Seeger. In 1969, when he inscribed on his banjo the phrase “This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender,” he was alluding to the immense power of art to dismantle and subvert ideas and systems. This formulation—free of “isms” and violence—also reaffirmed his civic and political commitment to fighting hatred and standing for democracy, justice, and freedom. He managed to do so in a way that was at once poignant and subtle, simple yet profoundly dense.

Today, the debate around difference, access, history, symbols, and culture is shaped by various prejudices. If we do not learn to question them, it will be difficult to build a better democratic system. The quality of our democracy depends on our individual creativity and our collective imagination. This Machine has already passed through Sever do Vouga, Ovar, and Ílhavo, and now arrives in Guimarães. It will promote workshops, debates, residencies, and performances addressing discrimination, symbols, and citizenship. We aim to dismantle the dramatic and frenetic logic of polarization that defines our present moment, engaging the diverse communities that make up the city of Guimarães today.
