For the exhibition title, the artist chose a colloquial Polish expression meaning “and so on” or “etc., etc.”

In what now seems like a distant past, Dorota Jurczak’s work—in which painting played a prominent role alongside printmaking—was populated by creatures resembling the outcome of genetic mutations, hybrid figures that blurred the boundaries between human and animal, and bodies in which the human and the inanimate merged. Some works depicted bleak and macabre scenes, a kind of theatre of cruelty governed by the laws of violence.

However, in several of the later works shown at Culturgest, a noticeable shift had already taken place. The artist’s visual language had become more restrained, while her formal and expressive vocabulary grew increasingly refined—a tendency that has continued to develop, along different paths, over the past decade.

Today, as in the past, the figures inhabiting Dorota Jurczak’s universe seem to have stepped out of literature—having escaped the world we inhabit. The works brought together in this exhibition, remarkable for their elegance and subtlety, stand apart from the dominant styles and discourses of contemporary art. They follow their own quietly solitary and independent path.

Untimely is perhaps the adjective that best describes them.
